Despite what you’ve heard, North Korea poses no serious threat to South Korea. Let’s look at the claims:
1. North Korean nukes.
Not a concern. Why? Because they’re still in the experimental phase and they are so large and fragile, they’d have to be transported by double wide 18-wheeler. More realistically they’d use it as a defensive weapon if the South tried to invade and take Pyongyang.
2. Million man army.
They’re starving and not particularly motivated. They have limited training and are armed with last-century weapons. Their tanks are decades old and don’t have anywhere near the same range as a South Korean or American tank. What this means is that should takes come rolling over the DMZ, we’ll be able to shoot them dead before they can return fire. Also consider the strength of our satellites. Even Google maps has high-enough resolution satellites as to be able to see North Korean military bases. The US Army has been tracking the North Korean military for the better part of 30 years and I wouldn’t be surprised if they knew where 90% of the North Korean army is at any given time.
3. Bombing.
North Korea has something like 30 operational planes and most of them are slow bombers. It wouldn’t take more than two or three South Korean F-15’s to take out the entire North Korean air force.
4. Artillery.
Everyone says that the North has enough cannons pointed at Seoul as to destroy it within minutes. What they don’t tell you is that they can only really hit Uijeongbu. If you live in Seoul proper there is little to no concern.
Here’s how things would play down. North Korea would get their troops moving only to have South Korea and the US military immediately start bombing the crap out of ‘em. North Korea will get off a couple artillery rounds but will have their army decimated within hours. The biggest concern for those of us in Seoul would be North Korean diehards who may attempt to cross the border and terrorize Seoul. Solution? Avoid the party areas.
Here’s the thing, the US military is without doubt the strongest and most capable standing military today. It has been designed since WW2 to be able to crush standing armies like tin cans. What the US military is not good at is dealing with insurgencies as we can see in Afghanistan and Iraq. If Kim Jong Il attempts to fight with his men and machines he will be crushed to pieces.
North Korea has officially been accused of sinking that ship. NK says they will retaliate with all out war if SK tries to do anything about it.
